People who know Tokyo have told us that since the disaster occurred Tokyo is darker than ever before, less convenient than ever before and all around much worse off. looking at poster such as the one above, indicating that the reality is, Tokyo is saving electricity, is the only thing that truly brings about the idea that any saving is occurring. As a foreigner, Tokyo still looks bright, seems convenient and has everything I expect a metropolitan city to have. It is only the talk and the visuals that tell me otherwise. I think it is important to note that the Japanese government is allowing citizens the opportunity to avoid blackout by asking that they conserve in any way possible. It harks back to the idea of japanese society as sacrificing for the group but in a way that is sure to affect themselves very personally. Clearly the sense of urgency that these sudden posters, anouncements and propogation promote make it a more pressing issue than eco. This is simply because it is a pressing issue. Recycling is an everyday and habitual deed that should be done, however, trying to severely cut down on energy usage requires much more intention and focus. So in the end, yes, setsuden has replaced Eco at this time, will it permanently? Unlikely.
